Generative AI in civil engineering: applications, benefits and challenges

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the civil engineering profession. How does the technology work, and which applications are most relevant to engineers and construction companies?

In this article we explore the potential of generative AI and how it can improve efficiency, innovation and sustainability in construction and civil engineering projects. We also highlight the challenges of implementation, including the need for standardisation, reliability in generated solutions and the integration of advanced technologies into engineering processes.

A concrete example of this integration is the use of BIM (Building Information Modelling), a technology that enables digital twins of construction projects. By combining BIM with generative AI, engineers can optimise design, simulate complex scenarios and develop new solutions quickly.

AI covers technologies such as machine learning, deep learning and neural networks, which are used to automate processes and improve decision-making. In civil engineering, AI is used to address complex challenges in infrastructure, including bridges, roads, buildings and water facilities.

Design – AI optimises design processes through predictive analysis, making it possible to identify structural problems before construction begins. Construction processes – AI monitors the workflow in real time and can identify inefficiencies and control automated machinery. Maintenance and asset management – By analysing large amounts of data, AI can detect signs of wear and plan predictive maintenance, which reduces the risk of unexpected failures.

These areas of use make AI a critical component in improving efficiency, safety and sustainability in construction projects.
